He was born March 31 1596 to a man named Joachim and a woman Jeanne Descartes. His mother died giving birth to another son who also died. He spent more then half of his childhood at La Haye located in France with his two siblings Pierre, and Jeanne. Pierre was his older brother and Jeanne is his older sister. His father got remarried and Rene had two more siblings both half, ones name was Joachim(half brother) and the other ones name was Anne(half sister).

He Finished La Fleche in 1615, after many years of studying law. He passed with two consequetive examinations for his baccalauréat degree and his licence in law. In 1618 Rene went to Breda in Holland, there he joined the army of Prince Maurice of Nassua. In Holland he met a guy named Isaac Beekman who was very impressed with Rene's ability in math. By 1662 he was back in Paris, were he had fought but had very much respect for his opponent. He traveled to Italy shortly after the fight from March 1623 to May 1625 and was leading the thinkers in France through his friendship with Marin Mersenne. In 1628 he left France for Holland which eventually became his home, in 1629 he enrolled at the University of Franeker. He was working on a treatise- "trying to figure out if God was real and of our souls when they are separate from our bodies – from which their immortality follows"
